American Waypoints — Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 21, 2026 · Last updated: September 21, 2026

American Waypoints ("the App", "we", "us", "our") is a GPS heritage-tourism app that guides visitors to historic sites, published by WARRIOR Enterprises LLC ("the Company"), Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA. This policy explains what information the App collects, how we use it, what we deliberately do not do, and the choices you have. We built the App to collect as little as possible.

The short version. The App uses your phone's location only to confirm you are physically at a historic site so it can "stamp" your visit. Your private journal entries and time-capsule messages stay on your phone and are never readable by us. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we do not use third-party advertising trackers.

1. Information we collect

Location (precise GPS)

When you use the map and check in at a site, the App reads your device's precise location to confirm you are within a site's radius (about 50 metres). Location is used only for this on-site functionality. We do not track your location in the background, we do not build a location history, and we do not share your location with advertisers.

Account information (optional)

You can browse the App without an account. If you create a profile, you may provide a display name, a hometown, and an optional ZIP code. Your ZIP code is only transmitted to us if you explicitly consent, and only in anonymized form for grant reporting (see Section 3).

Visit and activity data

To power features such as the Patriot Passport, points, and the leaderboard, we store the actions you take in the App — for example, verified check-ins, quiz results, points earned, and approved guest-book entries.

Anonymous device identifier and usage analytics

The App generates an anonymous identifier for your device and records anonymous engagement data (for example, which features are used and how often). This is first-party analytics stored on our own servers and is used for grant reporting and improving the App. It is not linked to your real-world identity and is not sold or shared for advertising.

Content you create

WhatWhere it lives
Private journalStored only on your device. Journal text never leaves your phone and is never transmitted to us.
Photo mission photosStored only on your device. Photos you take for the "then and now" mission stay on the phone.
Time capsule messagesSealed until July 4, 2076. No one, including administrators, can read capsule contents. We can see only that a capsule exists (a count), not what it says.
Guest book entriesPublic. An entry you sign is stored on our servers and shown to others only after a moderator approves it.

Device permissions

You can decline or revoke any of these in your device settings; some features will simply be unavailable.

2. How we use information

3. What we do NOT do

4. How information is shared

We do not sell data. We share data only with service providers that operate the App on our behalf, and only as needed:

ProviderPurpose
RailwayCloud hosting for our servers and database.
CARTO / MapLibreMap tiles and map rendering. Loading map tiles involves standard network requests (such as your IP address) to the tile provider.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users and the Company.

5. Data retention

We keep account and visit data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. Anonymized analytics are retained for grant-reporting continuity. On-device content (journal, photos) is retained on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App.

6. Data security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data, including access controls and secrets kept in our hosting environment (never in the app code). Administrator access is role-based. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information.

7. Children's privacy

The App is family-friendly and educational, but it is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. Your choices and rights

9. Data outside your region

The App is operated from the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the U.S.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, provide a more prominent notice.
